GOP Blocks Canada Tariff Repeal As Trump Trade War Escalates

Senate Republicans blocked legislation from Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Peter Welch aimed at repealing President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian imports. The BAD DEAL Act would repeal tariffs imposed under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 and refund duties paid under that authority. Welch sought unanimous consent to advance the bill, but the request was blocked by Senator Mike Crapo. The move comes as U.S.-Canada trade tensions remain high, with new restrictions on Canadian imports adding to the dispute. Gillibrand and Welch argue the tariffs are increasing costs and damaging businesses, while Republicans have opposed the effort to roll back Trump’s trade measures.
